Off to some French Christmas Markets
The girls were away for their annual Chlaus weekend with the fussball team, so we took advantage of a weekend getaway to France. Do we look a little too happy to be heading out?
Our primary objective was to see Colmar and experience its rumored wonderful Christmas Market. We knew it was going to be crowded when we could not get a hotel room!
Colmar has been described as the Beauty and the Beast village. It was a pretty place from what we saw. Unfortunately with the crowd, we had to pay more attention to walking than looking, so maybe we will go back in the spring with the girls to get more of a view of the town. We did enjoy what we saw though.
We wisely decided to take an early lunch break and duck into this little French restaurant, which was turning people away a half hour later. When in France, one must have French Onion Soup...
and a pot of mussels...with french fries...
We were amused by the assortment of hats. PDA took on a whole new dimension with this hat...
A lot of people were sporting these hats.
We were tempted to buy one, but couldn't think of anyone who would be brave enough to actually wear it.
Apparently in Colmar, Santa arrives by ski...
...and their penguins are huge!
It was very storybook-ish, though! (That, however, is fake snow on the trees and bushes.)
After our fill of the sights of Colmar, and the tastes and smells of Gluhwein and maccaroons, we head to our second French town, Mulhouse.
We stayed at a wonderful hotel, which luckily featured prominently on the maps posted outside the train station, as our Google directions would have had us completely lost.
Despite the rain, we enjoyed a Sunday morning strolling through the much smaller Christmas Market and seeing the town.
This Christmas Market had some different offerings than the one at Colmar, which is nice because sometimes they all seem to be the same with just the surroundings a little different. We were amused by this spoon holder which looked like a Hershey kiss.
It was raw and rainy so David broke down and bought himself a warm neck scarf. Now he looks all European. ;)
In walking around the town we spied two of his favorite things - an Irish pub (closed though) and part of the old wall of the city.
We saw some things which probably needed further explanations...
...and then we saw this ironic picture...
One day this will be us....God willing!
